Advancement Services Strategic Planning
Advancement services can play a critical role in a development team’s strategic planning process. In this session, we will explore practical approaches for the entire advancement operation, particularly focusing on the inter-dependent relationship between budgeting, staffing, and department and unit goals. Participants will learn about strategic planning processes and formats, and how to use the process to be proactive in developing group goals and objectives—even if this doesn’t reflect you organization’s current culture.
Paul Craft, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Mount St. Mary's College
As Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, Paul Craft oversees alumnae relations, development, corporate and foundation relations, public relations, special events, and advancement services. Prior to joining Mount St. Mary’s, Craft served as chief information officer for UCLA External Affairs and held senior positions with national travel management firms McCord Travel and Hoffman Travel, as well as the international accounting firm KPMG Peat Marwick.

Are Facebook and Twitter really old hat? Yes – in the sense that it's time for institutions to integrate these and other social media and social networking tools into awareness, fundraising and other types of campaigns. Today's busy and sophisticated consumers (i. e., your constituents, alumni and prospects) respond better when you use multiple channels – especially when you do it with some imagination and flair. In this session, we'll examine successful examples of campaigns that integrate Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and other Web 2.0 tools with print and other media. We'll explore the characteristics of effective, multiple-channel campaigns and inspire you to create your own.

This presentation will discuss a process for underwater endowment reporting: developing a timeline, drafting endowment reports, including your development officers in the notification process, writing personal notes and providing options to donors about their underwater endowments. We will discuss how endowment funds are distributed and UPMIFA - the 2006 Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act.

Evie Tole, Assistant Dean for Development, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, University of California, Riverside (UCR)
Evie Tole has been a fundraiser since 1986. Prior to moving into the role of Assistant Dean at UCR, she served first as the institution’s Director of Major Gifts, and then as Executive Director of Principal Gifts. Before beginning at UCR, she spent 10 years in Zimbabwe as a manager and fundraiser for arts organizations; a grant writer then Director of Development at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; and Director of Development for South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa. Tole earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Winnipeg, where she was awarded the University Gold Medal in Honors English, and earned a master’s degree from Carleton University, Ottawa.
