With an increased focus on fundraising at institutions across the country, the role of Advancement Services is increasingly in the spotlight. As a service unit to Advancement, the institution, and external constituents, Advancement Services has a multitude of legal, technical, and procedural duties and standards to uphold on a daily basis. This session will look at the advantages, challenges, and best practices that smaller Advancement Services/Operations units have serving campus and external constituents. Topics to be covered include business process management, personnel management, IT, and customer service.
Robyn M. Hafer, Interim Director of Advancement Operations, California State University, Chico (CSU Chico),
Robyn began her career in Advancement at CSU Chico, as the Assistant to the Vice President for University Advancement. In August 2007, she was appointed Interim Director of Advancement Operations after the division reorganized and the unit was created. In addition to overseeing the traditional Advancement Services of gift and pledge processing, IT, and database management, she manages the division budget and HR functions and serves as a lead for division strategic planning initiatives.

Celebrating 60: University of San Diego's Strategic Partnership Marketing Plan
In 2009, the University of San Diego (USD) celebrated the 60th anniversary of its founding, applauding its achievements of the past and heralding its most promising goals for the future. In this session, the chair of the 60th Anniversary Committee will discuss the USD case study – a yearlong comprehensive partnership and marketing campaign that created mass awareness, promoted excitement and generated incremental revenue.
Coreen G. Petti, Assistant Vice President, Marketing and Strategic Partnerships, University of San Diego
Coreen Petti is the Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships. Petti is an experienced strategic marketer and corporate fundraiser with more than two decades of developing high-profile, promotionally oriented programs that result in increased awareness and net revenue returns in both higher education and the for-profit sector. Petti served as Manager of National Promotions and Corporate Sponsorships for the Anheuser-Busch Theme Parks (Sea World and Busch Gardens) prior to USD.

Looking at various methodologies and available tools and strategies, this session will explore how to find and engage alumni, plan and execute successful activities, and how to moblize your institution’s faculty to locate and recruit alumni. Planned discussion will also cover establishing an Alumni Hall of Fame and Hall of Champions.
Ginny Baxter, Foundation Executive Director, Long Beach City College (LBCC)
Over the last several years, Ginny Baxter has raised more than $30 million for Long Beach City College and, in 1991, received the first Network of California Community College Foundations Excellence in Development Award. She has supervised the LBCC Alumni Association since 1983, and when budget cuts resulted in the layoff of the alumni director, Dr. Baxter and her administrative assistant, Lois Schneider, successfully took over the reigns and created new ways of reaching out to alumni through Facebook and e-mail.

Eureka! Finding Solutions for Challenging Donors
What do you do when a donor relationship goes sour? Or when you're working with a dean who has inherited a donor-funded program she no longer believes is a priority for the institution? In this session, we'll explore ways in which you can find solutions to problems working with donors whose relationship with your institution has changed for the worse. You will have an opportunity to share your experiences and learn from others on how to turn a challenging donor relationship into a positive one.
Deborah A. Young, CFRE, Director of Scholarship and Tribute Giving, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Foundation
With 25 years in the field of development, Deborah Young has vast experience with major gifts, donor stewardship, annual giving, and grant writing, among other areas. She became Director of Development for UNLV's Harrah Hotel College in 1999 and established the college's first advisory board and major gift programs. In her current position, she works with major gift donors, constituency development officers, deans and other university officials to manage the complex area of scholarship giving.
Nikki Khurana, Director of Development for Student Affairs, Cal Poly Pomona
Nikki began her development career 15 years ago as a student caller for Cal Poly Pomona's Annual Fund. She was promoted to Annual Fund Director, where she launched the Annual Fund Executive Council and increased collections and pledge rate through direct mail and e-solicitation. In her current role, she works with corporate, foundation, and individual donors, as well as internal partners, and has increased giving and enjoyed success in building cross-divisional donor relationships.

Mike Moses, Director of Alumni Relations, ‘Iolani School
Mike Moses has been at ‘Iolani for five years, overseeing special events, regional alumni programs, reunions, the alumni association’s board, and the school’s alumni online community. Prior to ‘Iolani, he was the Director of Development at Mid-Pacific Institute and has also served as the Director of the 49er Athletic Association at California State University, Long Beach. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Washington and his master’s degree in sports management from the University of San Francisco. Moses is the Treasurer for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Aloha Chapter.
Jane Heimerdinger, Director of Institutional Advancement, ‘Iolani School
Jane Heimerdinger has been Director of Institutional Advancement at `Iolani for the past nine years, previously serving on the school’s faculty, then as assistant dean of the elementary division. Before joining `Iolani, she was assistant head of The Teacher Center (a nonprofit) and an instructor at the Martin Luther King Laboratory School and National College of Education. She has served as president of Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Aloha Chapter, (earning the 2008 National Diversity Award), chaired the National Philanthropy Day Awards Conference in 2005 and 2006, founded the Young Leaders in Philanthropy program and chaired the first CASE/HAIS Conference in Hawai`i. She is a contributing author for Philanthropy at Independent Schools (National Association of Independent Schools, 2009) and currently serves on the CASE District VII Board of Directors.
Jim Pattison, Sr. Advancement Officer, Harvard-Westlake School
As Senior Advancement Officer, Jim Pattison manages overall operations for the Office of Advancement, and concentrates on gift planning, stewardship, endowment growth, and solicitations to corporations and foundations. Pattison is also a member of the $175 million “Opportunity of a Lifetime” comprehensive campaign.

Kyle C. Button, CFRE, is vice president for Institutional Advancement at California State University, Los Angeles.
In his capacity as vice president, Kyle is also executive director of The CSLA Foundation. Prior to joining Cal State L.A., Kyle worked in development and marketing for CSU Long Beach, The California Institute for the Arts (CalArts), New York University, The American University and Colgate University. Kyle has also worked as a grants officer at both the New York and New Jersey State Councils on the Arts. Kyle is proud of his associations with both CASE. Kyle is currently serving on the board of CASE District VII and is the District VII CASE Trustee. Kyle is a past commissioner for the CASE Commission on Philanthropy during which time he co-authored the Principles of Practice for Fundraising Professionals. This year marks his 20th year in educational fundraising and advancement.
Ron Stephany, Retired Vice President for University Relations, University of Redlands
Ron Stephany began his career at Ohio Wesleyan University. He then served Oberlin College as vice president for development and alumni relations and the University of Redlands as vice president for university relations. He chaired both CASE Districts V and VII and was as a member of the CASE International board. A recipient of CASE’s Frank Ashmore Award for service to CASE and the advancement profession, Ron has lectured nationally on the topics of fund development and marketing and branding.
Deborah Mandabach, Communications Consultant
Deborah Mandabach launched her marketing career in the financial industry after completing her undergraduate studies at California State University, Long Beach. In 1987 she moved to hospital marketing, first at Community Hospital and then at St. Bernardine Medical Center, both in San Bernardino. In 1993 she was appointed Director of Public Relations at the University of La Verne; in 2003, she joined University of Redlands as Director of Public Relations and Communications. She holds a master’s degree in management from Claremont Graduate University.
