As Assistant Vice Chancellor, Lori Redfearn provides strategic leadership for 23 CSU campuses by encouraging best practices, performance benchmarking, and accountability standards. She also serves as Vice President of the CSU Foundation and on the CASE Advancement Investment Metrics Study national taskforce--a study that will provide national, comparative data for advancement return-on-investment and the fundraising cost to raise a dollar.

Advancement Services Strategic Planning
Advancement services can play a critical role in a development team’s strategic planning process. In this session, we will explore practical approaches for the entire advancement operation, particularly focusing on the inter-dependent relationship between budgeting, staffing, and department and unit goals. Participants will learn about strategic planning processes and formats, and how to use the process to be proactive in developing group goals and objectives—even if this doesn’t reflect you organization’s current culture.
Paul Craft, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Mount St. Mary's College
As Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, Paul Craft oversees alumnae relations, development, corporate and foundation relations, public relations, special events, and advancement services. Prior to joining Mount St. Mary’s, Craft served as chief information officer for UCLA External Affairs and held senior positions with national travel management firms McCord Travel and Hoffman Travel, as well as the international accounting firm KPMG Peat Marwick.

Sue Ott is Director of Advancement Services at Mount St. Mary’s College. Previously, Ott held accounting and information technology positions with the Kansas University Endowment Association. Effectively Stewarding Donors Whose Endowments Are Underwater
This presentation will discuss a process for underwater endowment reporting: developing a timeline, drafting endowment reports, including your development officers in the notification process, writing personal notes and providing options to donors about their underwater endowments. We will discuss how endowment funds are distributed and UPMIFA - the 2006 Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act.

Prior to joining the University of Nevada, John K. Carothers held several key leadership positions in both the educational and political fields, including Vice President of Institutional Advancement at State University of New York, Plattsburgh; Vice President of Wilson College; Special Assistant to the Majority Leader of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives; and Pennsylvania Assistant Deputy Treasurer. Carothers earned a bachelors degree from Alleghany College and a master's degree from Pennsylvania State University.

Building and Evolving a Donor Stewardship Program
Using a case study examining the process of building and evolving a donor stewardship program in a large, decentralized university setting, this session will provide an opportunity for participants to juxtapose their own situations, challenges, and successes. The presenter will outline the path by which a basic program of acknowledgements and scholarship reporting grew into a comprehensive portfolio of 20+ programs that generated nearly 35,000 donor "touches" in 2008-09; participants will then engage in a process of thinking through their own acknowledgement, recognition, and reporting programs, and identifying strategic directions for the programs they manage.
Nancy Lubich McKinney, Director of Donor Stewardship, University of California, Berkeley
Director of Donor Stewardship Nancy Lubich McKinney envisioned and implemented an endowment financial reporting program for UCB that won the 2007 CASE Gold Medal, and is a past presenter for CASE national and district conferences, and for the Association of Donor Relations Professionals, an organization which she currently serves as president. McKinney came to the educational industry in 2004, following a three-year stint as an independent consultant and a 17-year career at Bank of America, where she was Senior Vice President and Senior Marketing Officer for the International Corporate Banking Group. McKinney holds two undergraduate degrees from the University of California, Berkeley; an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA; a certificate in marketing from the University of California, Berkeley Extension; and a certificate in nonprofit management from the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Matching Gifts: Latest and Greatest
Matching gift revenue has never been a source of funds to be taken for granted, but given recent economic concerns, the competition for matching gifts will undoubtedly become more intense. Review some of the basics about matching gifts, and then more actively and intensely review results from the fourth annual survey on matching gifts hosted through SupportingAdvancement.com. Finding out the methods and means other organizations have found to be most effective for attracting matching gifts could save us all a little “trial and error” time as we pursue those gifts for our respective organizations.
Amy Phillips, Gift Registrar, Smithsonian Institution
With more than 20 years of work experience at various charitable organizations, Amy Phillips has acquired an understanding for many aspects of nonprofit management. Currently the Gift Registrar for the Smithsonian Institution, Phillips’ prior experience in institutional advancement has included positions at two colleges, a museum and a “think tank” in Washington, D.C., as well as various contractual/consulting opportunities. An active CASE member, Phillips has earned “faculty star” citations as a presenter at several conferences, including the annual Summer Institute in Advancement Services. She has also given presentations on software utilization tricks, best office practices and matching gift processes for the Millennium user community, as well as the Association for Advancement Services Professionals [AASP]. She is an active Founding Member of AASP, serving on the Board as membership chair and member of the Ethics Committee.

Wayne Combs, Director, Advancement Services and Information Management, Occidental College
Wayne Combs is the Director of Advancement Services and Information Management at Occidental College. Prior to Occidental, Combs served as Manager, Gift, Data, & Record Services at University of California, San Diego, and as Campaign Operations Manager for the University of Washington's $2 billion campaign, where he oversaw a three-year strategic plan for nine operating units. Combs began his career in higher education at UCLA, supporting advancement efforts in the use of technology to prepare for a $3 billion campaign.

Running a Small Advancement Services Shop
With an increased focus on fundraising at institutions across the country, the role of Advancement Services is increasingly in the spotlight. As a service unit to Advancement, the institution, and external constituents, Advancement Services has a multitude of legal, technical, and procedural duties and standards to uphold on a daily basis. This session will look at the advantages, challenges, and best practices that smaller Advancement Services/Operations units have serving campus and external constituents. Topics to be covered include business process management, personnel management, IT, and customer service.
Robyn M. Hafer, Interim Director of Advancement Operations, California State University, Chico (CSU Chico)
Robyn began her career in Advancement at CSU Chico, as the Assistant to the Vice President for University Advancement. In August 2007, she was appointed Interim Director of Advancement Operations after the division reorganized and the unit was created. In addition to overseeing the traditional Advancement Services of gift and pledge processing, IT, and database management, she manages the division budget and HR functions and serves as a lead for division strategic planning initiatives.

Advancement Services' Role in the University's First Comprehensive Campaign
Brian Lawver, Director of Advancement Services, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB)
Joined CSLUB’s university relations and development division in 1989, Brian Lawver currently serves as Director of Advancement Services, overseeing the Alumni Records Office, the Office of Prospect Management and Research, and the Division Technology Office. He is a member of the SunGard Higher Education Advance User Group Executive Committee, having previously served as Vice Chair of the SunGard Higher Education User Group and presented while serving on the CASE Matching Gifts Advisory Board. Lawver is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Anna is a prospect management analyst at Cal State Long Beach and has played an integral role in the development of reports and communication to campus colleagues in preparation of the campaign.
