Personal Branding
Products are brands. Services are brands. And yes, people are brands. You are your own brand steward--you decide who you matter to, and why. You control how you’re perceived by those you know as well as those you’ve yet to meet. In this session, we’ll discuss how branding applies to individuals and how you can build your own, personal, influential identity. This seminar is presented annually at the world’s most prestigious business schools and is right for audiences young and old – only an interest in “branding you” is required.
Sasha Strauss, Founder and Managing Director, Innovation Protocol
Strauss is the Managing Director at Innovation Protocol, a brand strategy consulting firm that exclusively serves innovators, with a client roster that includes global market leaders such as Johnson & Johnson, Korn/Ferry International, and PayPal, as well as various media and academic institutions. Strauss has presented his award-winning brand strategy forums throughout East Asia, Europe and north America, and he is a frequent contributor on the subject of branding for media outlets such as NPR, ABC Radio and The Wall Street Journal; in addition he serves as an adjunct professor at USC's Annenberg School for Communication, where he teaches graduate brand strategy. A strong proponent of philanthropy, Struass annually donates 10% of his company's brand strategy services to non-profits.

Faculty Partners in Development: A Four-Step Plan to Increase Faculty Involvement
Every fundraiser knows about the fundraising cycle, but did you realize that these steps can also lead to successful partnerships with faculty and deans to further your development goals? This session will effectively utilize case studies to demonstrate how your strengths as a fundraiser can be focused internally to create a cadre of motivated faculty who will be important allies in your development efforts.
Evie Tole, Assistant Dean for Development, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, University of California, Riverside (UCR)
Evie Tole has been a fundraiser since 1986. Prior to moving into the role of Assistant Dean at UCR, she served first as the institution’s Director of Major Gifts, and then as Executive Director of Principal Gifts. Before beginning at UCR, she spent 10 years in Zimbabwe as a manager and fundraiser for arts organizations; a grant writer then Director of Development at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; and Director of Development for South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa. Tole earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Winnipeg, where she was awarded the University Gold Medal in Honors English, and earned a master’s degree from Carleton University, Ottawa.

Persuasive Development Writing - An Introduction (part b)
This is the second of a two-part session covering an introduction to the key components that will make you a better – and more successful – development writer, understanding your audience, making your case, crafting your message, avoiding common mistakes, and providing you with examples that work.
Robin Torbron Warde, Director, Bryant University
Robin TorbronWarde has been in educational fundraising for the past 26 years and is a regular instructor for CASE’s bi-annual Persuasive Development Writing Conference. In 2001, she joined Bryant University as Director of Development for Institutional Programs. In that position, and as interim Executive Director of Development in 2002-2003, she worked to meet Bryant’s campaign goal of $35 million, 15 months ahead of schedule. Currently, she serves as Director of Alumni Relations as well as carrying a major gift prospect pool for the development department. Previously, Wardre served as Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations for Brown Medical School; Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at Wheaton College; Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at Brown University; and Associate Director of Corporate Relations at Columbia University and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
Tracy Mills, Marketing Director, The American Himalayan Foundation
Tracy Mills is the marketing director at the American Himalayan Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping the people and ecology of the Himalaya. Prior to joining AHF she spent seven years at the University of California, Berkeley, most recently as the associate director of library development where she was responsible for soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. The library recruited her in 2003 to coordinate a campaign for the renovation of The Bancroft Library, which raised over $34 million in three years.
Before embarking on a career in development, Mills was a business consultant with Accenture, a leading global management consulting firm. She received her bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and she interned with The Napa Group, a management consulting firm specializing in higher education.

Pam Hillman, Vice President University Advancement, California State University, Fullerton
Pamela Hillman joined California State University, Fullerton, in February 2003. As vice president, she leads the university’s comprehensive fundraising program, alumni relations, strategic communications, public affairs, government and community relations, special events, and advancement services, and oversees the Philanthropic Foundation. Her responsibilities include designing, implementing, managing, and evaluating a comprehensive advancement program, as well as building relationships externally and within the campus community to garner private support for CSU, Fullerton. Previously, Hillman was Associate Vice Chancellor for Development at University of California, Riverside, responsible for leading and coordinating the institution’s fundraising efforts—both in the central office and within the colleges, school, and programs. Hillman has also served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, where she implemented and directed a successful $40 million capital campaign; Director of Development for the UCLA’s Anderson Graduate School of Management School; and Director of Annual Giving at California Institute of Technology.
Russ Kost, Vice President of Development, Desert Research Institute
Russ Kost is the Vice President for Development for the Desert Research Institute in Las Vegas. Prior to joining the Desert Research Institute, Russ Kost spent 23 years at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he served as Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations and Development, as well as Executive Director of the UNLV Alumni Association. He began as the Assistant to the UNLV Foundation Executive Director, and then assumed the following roles: Annual Giving Coordinator, Director of Annual Giving, Director of Major and Planned Giving, Director of Gift Planning and Director of Principal Gifts.
Theresa (Tere) Mendoza, Senior Advisor, California State University System
As Senior Advisor, Tere Mendoza strategically partners with the president and executive leadership of each campus to build successful advancement programs that enhance the university's prestige, build alumni loyalty, and procure philanthropic resources to enrich the academic and student learning environments. Prior to joining the Chancellor's Office, Tere was Vice President of University Advancement and founding CEO of the Campanile Foundation at San Diego State University. During her nine-year tenure, the university raised an unprecedented $400 million, and increased the annual productivity from $20 million to $65.5 million. Ms. Mendoza spent 15 years at Arizona State University where she served as the Executive Vice President of the Arizona State University Foundation and Campaign Director of ASU's Campaign for Leadership, which raised over half a billion dollars.
Jim Purcell, Vice President University Relations, Santa Clara University
Jim Purcell has been vice president of Santa Clara since 1997, responsible for Alumni Relations, Development, and the Office of Marketing and Communications, as well as serving on the and President's Cabinet. Under Purcell’s leadership, the Development Office recently completed the “Campaign for Santa Clara,” raising more than $404 million for scholarships, faculty, capital projects, and technology.

All that Glitters: Tools for Ethical Decision-Making in Advancement
This interdisciplinary panel of senior advancement professionals will present practical and real-life case studies that examine both the ethical implications of decision-making in advancement and the potential for down-stream unintended consequences. The panel will also discuss the source of ethical dilemmas – conflicting values (many both positive) – that can make ethical choices difficult. Case studies will be drawn from the full spectrum of advancement disciplines. Bring your own questions and “hypothetical situations” with names changed to protect the innocent – or the not-so-innocent.
Kyle Button, Vice president for Advancement, California State University, Los Angeles,
Kyle C. Button, CFRE, is vice president for Institutional Advancement at California State University, Los Angeles. In his capacity as vice president, Kyle is also executive director of The CSLA Foundation. Prior to joining Cal State L.A., Kyle worked in development and marketing for CSU Long Beach, The California Institute for the Arts (CalArts), New York University, The American University and Colgate University. Kyle has also worked as a grants officer at both the New York and New Jersey State Councils on the Arts. Kyle is proud of his associations with both CASE. Kyle is currently serving on the board of CASE District VII and is the District VII CASE Trustee. Kyle is a past commissioner for the CASE Commission on Philanthropy during which time he co-authored the Principles of Practice for Fundraising Professionals. This year marks his 20th year in educational fundraising and advancement.
Ron Stephany, Retired Vice President for University Relations, University of Redlands,
Ron Stephany began his career at Ohio Wesleyan University. He then served Oberlin College as vice president for development and alumni relations and the University of Redlands as vice president for university relations. He chaired both CASE Districts V and VII and was as a member of the CASE International board. A recipient of CASE’s Frank Ashmore Award for service to CASE and the advancement profession, Ron has lectured nationally on the topics of fund development and marketing and branding.

Deborah Mandabach launched her marketing career in the financial industry after completing her undergraduate studies at California State University, Long Beach. In 1987 she moved to hospital marketing, first at Community Hospital and then at St. Bernardine Medical Center, both in San Bernardino. In 1993 she was appointed Director of Public Relations at the University of La Verne; in 2003, she joined University of Redlands as Director of Public Relations and Communications. She holds a master’s degree in management from Claremont Graduate University.

Over a twenty-five year period, Judith Tuch has had an extensive career in information management at the University of California, Los Angeles and, prior to that, the California Savings and Loan League of Los Angeles. As Executive Director of Information Management at UCLA External Affairs, Judith oversaw the implementation of a $13,000,000 department-wide database system that supported all gift, biographic, and alumni association membership information and related reporting; the management of computer-related training; and the management of all computer related support. Judith served at UCLA from 1982-2003. At the California Savings & Loan League Judith oversaw the implementation of a subscription system and advocacy program. In addition, Judith was closely involved in CASE District VII having served as Chair of District VII (2002-2003), Conference Program Chair, and District Secretary. She also served as Chair of the Special Interest Group for the Advance System (1994-1996). Judith holds an undergraduate and masters degree in art history from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Ray Watts,, Associate Vice President, University of Redlands
Raymond W. Watts, CFRE, is Associate Vice President at the University of Redlands. Ray manages the Development team at the University, and oversees all University philanthropic outreach efforts, working closely with Trustees, the President and the Vice President for University Relations to achieve organizational goals. Before assuming the role of AVP at Redlands, Ray served for five years as Director of Development, overseeing the major gift fundraising for the historic Centennial Campaign. Prior to coming to Redlands, Ray spent 7 years at his alma mater, Loyola Marymount University of Los Angeles, spending the last 4 years as Director of Annual and Special Campaigns.
Lisa Moore, Assistant Vice President for Development, St. Mary's College of California, Moraga
As Assistant Vice President, Lisa Moore oversees a staff of 15, including the Annual Fund, Athletic Development, Regional Development, Major Gifts, Planned Giving, and Prospect Research offices. Before joining St. Mary’s, she was a Regional Director and Major Gifts Officer for the University of San Francisco. Moore holds a master’s in nonprofit administration from the University of San Francisco.
A reprsentative from CFRE International will also join the panel to discuss the steps needed to become certified.
